QUALITY ? or COLOUR?

The help” movie explores the institutionalized discrimination that African American maids who worked in white families' houses during the Civil Rights period had to deal with. It revolves around Skeeter Phelan, a budding journalist who is committed to document the maids' untold experiences in order to bring attention to their problems. By exposing these brutal realities, she not only defies social expectations but also demonstrates the maids' bravery and tenacity in risking everything to have their voices heard. Aibileen Clark, Minny Jackson, Skeeter, and Hilly Holbrook are at the heart of the story, with their lives deeply intertwined.

Much more than race, the issue of "colour" in The Help represents the profound social hierarchies and obstacles imposed by racism. The video eloquently illustrates how Black characters are denied basic rights, such the ability to use the same restrooms as their white employers. This division symbolizes the psychological divide between the privileged and the disadvantaged and goes beyond simple physical boundaries. The social conventions are so strict that even Skeeter, a progressive white character, encounters criticism for defying them. The skepticism and criticism she receives for working with the maids to share their tales shows how deeply ingrained prejudice is in her town.

The emotional cost of racism is also discussed in the film. Though they refuse to acknowledge their humanity or respect them as equals, White families rely heavily on Black maids to care for their children and keep their homes in order. The duality of relying on someone while disparaging them generates a potent story about oppression and privilege. It serves as a powerful reminder of the inequalities that exist in both society and the closeness of family life.

The painful reality of this inequality are brought to light via the stories of two maids, Minny and Aibileen. Minny, a strong and vocal woman, has a lot of obstacles to overcome. She is forced by financial difficulties to put her daughter to work rather than school, depriving the child of a better future. In addition, Minny suffers abuse at the hands of Hilly, her boss, who degrades her by denying her access to the loo during periods of intense precipitation. But Minny's tenacity comes out in her defiance; her notorious "special" chocolate pie for Hilly turns into a memorable act of defiance. She later demonstrates her humanity even in the face of oppression as she prepares meals for her new bosses, demonstrating her compassion.

However, Aibileen's narrative is incredibly heartbreaking. She loses her kid tragically in an accident for which she never receives justice. The systemic disrespect for Black lives is highlighted by this sadness. However, Aibileen's story is also one of optimism and quiet bravery. A new chapter in her life is marked by her choice to pursue writing with Skeeter's support, signifying her tenacity and will for change.

In The Help, "quality" and "colour" are not merely superficial characteristics; rather, they allude to deeper societal structures that determine privilege and oppression in a racially divided society. By showing how maids like Minny and Aibileen endure unrelenting adversity while exhibiting remarkable resilience, the film explores the emotional, social, and psychological effects of systemic racism. Their hardships cause the viewer to consider the perils of mindlessly adhering to social standards and racial hierarchy. In the end, the story offers hope by exhibiting defiance, bravery, and the pursuit of justice, demonstrating the strength required to oppose oppression and regain dignity.
