Strengths behind
the Apron
-Aibileen and
Minny-
"Every fish in the pond is
different." This saying well fits with the characters
Aibileen and Minny in Tate Taylor's film “The Help”. The story held in 1960s
Mississippi, where African people work under the upper-class white families as
maids or gardeners. Even though these maids are talented and strong, their society
doesn’t allow them to show them. Aibileen Clark and Minny Jackson are two
characters with very different characteristics. They show us how strength looks
like. Aibileen is soft hearted and kind. Minny is fearless. Their strong
friendship helps them to face struggles in their unfair society. When Skeeter
visits Aibileen to talk about writing a book about the lives of Black maids, Minny
walks into Aibileen’s home casually. This shows their close bond and trust.
This friendship is also seen in Minny’s caring relationship with Celia Foote.
When Celia is treated poorly by Hilly Holbrook at the Ladies' Club, Minny
comforts her. This shows how supportive, and understanding is her.
Aibileen’s
strength is reflected through her ability to forgive and care for others, even
when she’s deeply hurt. She has raised 17 white children with love even after
losing her own son by a white. Even though she is in pain, she continues to be
kind, as she says in the movie, “They’s my baby, no matter what color they are”

Help (2011).
Aibileen’s tolerance is clear when at the Ladies' Club meeting, Hilly accusing blacks
of spreading diseases. Aibileen stays calm and says nothing.
Minny is fearless and reacts quickly for her own rights. When Hilly refused to let her use their bathroom during a storm, Minny ignored her and used it. This shows her courage. After Hilly caught her red-handed in the bathroom, Minny resigned from her job, showing her self-respect. Minny was also very creative with her revenge when she gave Hilly a special chocolate pie. This moment not only shows Minny’s victory but also her determination to fight back in her own way. In the movie, when she humorously says, “Fried chicken just tend to make you feel better about life” Tate Taylor. (2011), The Help revealing her sharp mind.
Here,
both women work as maids in a racist society. But their personalities are very
different. Aibileen is calm and forgiving others, while Minny is bold and
outspoken. But both use their unique strengths to make a difference. For
example, Aibileen heists to share her story with Skeeter at first because she
is fearing the post consequences. But when time passes, she finds the courage
to speak up, helping to create a book that challenges racial injustice for the
innocent blacks. Minny never hesitates to stand up for herself even if it puts
her job at risk.
The film shows that strength comes in
different forms. Aibileen’s quiet resilience and Minny’s fearless attitude both
help reveal the struggles of Black maids during that time. Their personal
victories remind us that even in an unfair world, people can hold on to their
dignity and courage. In the end, Aibileen and Minny are more than just maids they
represent friendship, and the fight for justice. They show us how people must deal
with their challenges and stay true to themselves. By this, Aibileen and Minny show
us to value our uniqueness and see strength in ourselves and others.
