Unmasking the Racial Injustice in “The Help”.

The Help is a powerful film directed by Tate Taylor. The film tells the stories of African American maids who face daily discrimination. The main characters include Aibileen Clark, a caring maid who raises white children; Minny Jackson, a strong-willed maid known for her sharp tongue; and Skeeter Phelan, a young white woman who wants to change the way society views these maids by telling their stories.

The Bathroom Incident.
One of the outstanding moments occurs when Hilly Holbrook, a prominent white socialite, insists that black maids must use separate restrooms. In a conversation between Hilly and Skeeter, Hilly states, “You can’t joke about the state of the colored skin; I will do anything to protect our child” . The cruelty of this belief is highlighted when Minny is forced to use Hilly's bathroom during a storm, depicting restrictions placed on black maids.

Employment Discrimination.
Aibileen’s dialogue reveals the unfair wages and working conditions faced by black maids. She explains,“I work for the Lefort family from 08:00 am to 04:00 pm...... I make 95 cents an hour totaling 182 dollars a month”. This contrast between her hard work and insufficient pay illustrates the economic exploitation of black women. The film poignantly captures how these women cared for white children while their own families were neglected.

Public Transportation Inequality.
A powerful scene unfolds when Aibileen and her friend Henry are riding a bus
divided along racial lines . When a white passenger needs to get off, the driver orders all black passengers to exit: “Blacks have to get off the bus now”. This moment depicts the discrimination enforced by Jim Crow laws, forcing Aibileen and Henry to walk home while white passengers remain safe on the bus.

Throughout” The Help”, conversations and situations vividly showcase the racial injustices experienced by African Americans. The film uses characterization effectively. Aibileen and Minny are symbolized as strong yet vulnerable women who refuses to broken by unfairness. In contrast, Hilly represents the harsh reality of racism, making her character a powerful antagonist.

The film production team did a great job on highlighting racial injustice. The way the movie is filmed and the music used make us feel the tension and discomfort of that time period.

By highlighting these injustices through powerful storytelling," The Help" not only entertains but also educates us about the importance of empathy, understanding, and standing up against discrimination in any form.
